If you are signing up in the United States, GoFundMe has two different campaign types to choose from: Personal or Certified Charity campaigns.
Here is a quick look at the differences between the two:
Personal campaigns are the most common campaign type on GoFundMe. You can raise money for just about anything and withdraw the funds personally, or send the funds directly to a beneficiary. There is no timeline or restrictions on how long you run a Personal campaign, and you can withdraw the funds at any time.
Personal campaigns allow you to collect the donations as they come in on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Personal campaigns do not automatically send your donors tax-deductible receipts like Certified Charity campaigns do.
Employees of an organisation can also use a Personal campaign type to withdraw directly to the organisation's bank account using their EIN. You will need to contact our team to make sure you are set up correctly for this option. Learn more.
As of 30 November 2017, personal campaigns set up in the US also have a 0% platform fee, while Certified Charity campaigns have a 5% platform fee. Payment processing fees still apply to both campaign types. Learn more.
Certified Charity Campaigns
Certified Charity campaigns can be created by anyone, whether you are a good samaritan wanting to support your favourite charity or an employee of a non-profit organisation. A "Certified Charity" badge will appear on the campaign to give your cause an extra layer of verification.
Donations made to Charity campaigns are processed through PayPal Giving Fund, a 501(c)3 public charity (Federal Tax ID: 45-0931286). The Campaign Organiser does not have to touch the money at all, and donors will automatically receive a tax-deductible receipt.
PayPal Giving Fund delivers the funds on a monthly basis to the 501(c)(3)'s PayPal account directly, once the charity is confirmed and enrolled. Only the person with access to the organisation's PayPal account will be able to complete the enrolment steps in order to receive funds raised through GoFundMe.
Note: If you are raising funds for an organisation or charity outside of the US, please contact our team to learn about your options.
