Changing the beneficiary of a fundraiser

We recommend only changing the beneficiary if they can no longer receive the funds. Some common reasons for this include not having proper documentation or being physically or emotionally unable to complete the process.

If the current beneficiary would like to remain the recipient of the funds instead, but is having trouble completing the bank transfer process, we can help.  Contact our team by clicking "Get help" if you think this fits your situation.

If you would prefer to change the current beneficiary, please read through the following scenarios to see which applies to you, then complete this form to submit your request to our team.

In the sad event that a beneficiary has passed away, please see this article instead.

1. Change beneficiary to someone else

  • The current beneficiary no longer wants to receive the funds in their bank account. Both the current beneficiary and the organiser agree that someone else should receive the funds instead.
  • We will get confirmation from both the GoFundMe organiser and the current beneficiary, then add the new beneficiary.
  • The organiser should update the fundraiser story to notify supporters of this change.

2. Return control of funds to organiser

  • The current beneficiary no longer wants to add their bank details. Both the current beneficiary and the organiser agree that the GoFundMe organiser should transfer funds to their own bank account instead.
  • We will get confirmation from both the GoFundMe organiser and the current beneficiary, then we will give back control of the funds to the GoFundMe organiser so that they can make transfers to their own bank account.
  • The organiser should update the fundraiser story to notify supporters of this change.

3. Transfer entire account to beneficiary

  • The GoFundMe organiser no longer wishes to be part of the fundraiser and would like to give full control of the fundraiser to the beneficiary.
  • This enables the beneficiary to continue making transfers while also editing and managing the fundraiser.
  • We will get confirmation from both the GoFundMe organiser and the current beneficiary, then we will transfer full account ownership to the beneficiary. The GoFundMe organiser will no longer be able to access the fundraiser.

Please bear in mind that the above situations apply when a beneficiary has already been added to the fundraiser by the organiser. If you are an organiser and have not added a beneficiary yet, you can select "someone else" during the bank transfer process and do not need to submit a request to our team. You can learn more about that process in this Help Centre article.

NB In certain cases, transfers may not be possible, but in those cases we will try our best to work with the organiser and beneficiary to find a solution.
