Sharing your fundraiser on Facebook

Facebook is a great place to share your fundraiser because it tends to reach a wide group of people, it allows for long text descriptions and you can include a clickable link.

It’s important to include a call to action to donate and share along with the link to your fundraiser. Since you have some additional space on Facebook, you should also include a few details about your fundraiser and why it’s important to you. Facebook allows you to add multiple images or videos as well.

Another great resource Facebook provides is Facebook Groups. Groups are different groups or communities that come together to share an interest. If you're already involved in Groups, make sure that you post your fundraiser there. If you haven't joined a Group, it's a good idea to research some Groups that might have similar interests to what you're raising funds for. Posting to Groups enables you to reach individuals you might not know personally.

Sharing to Facebook through GoFundMe:

  1. Go to the Manage dashboard for your fundraiser
  2. Click "Share fundraiser" and choose the Facebook option
  3. GoFundMe will generate a sharing poster that you can share as a Facebook post–it will include your main image, a goal bar, and an ask to donate

Sharing through Facebook:

  1. Sign in to your Facebook account
  2. Click the textbox that says "What’s on your mind?"
  3. Type your message in the box and make sure that you include your fundraiser link; you can add photos/videos using the "Add to your post" buttons
  4. Click "Post"

When creating your post, make sure that you include your fundraiser link along with a brief description of your target. Check that the privacy settings are set how you want them to be; choosing "Public" or "Friends" will ensure that you have the most visibility.

How can my charity benefit from the Meta enhanced social sharing tools?

Charities that have opted in to Meta's fundraising tools will have additional sharing capabilities on GoFundMe. Once qualified, the charity and their supporters will be able to share to Facebook with a clickable donate button and goal progress bar.

If your charity isn't already enrolled in Facebook fundraising tools, just follow these steps to take advantage of these sharing features:

  1. Create a Facebook Page for your organisation, if you don’t have one
  2. Apply for Facebook’s Fundraising Tools through Meta

Once approved through Meta, you and your charity's supporters will be able to use the sharing features.

Stay safe while sharing

GoFundMe and any social media platforms on which you share are public, which means bad actors can view both your fundraiser and any posts you make about it. Occasionally, bad actors may try to contact you through social media to advertise crowdfunding help. GoFundMe will never offer fundraiser promotion for a fee, and we don’t condone or suggest using any services that do.

Keep the following tips in mind when sharing on social media:

  • Never share your GoFundMe account or personal and bank details over social media.
  • Don't engage with individuals offering to promote your fundraiser for a fee.
  • Don't click on any links sent in DMs unless you trust the sender.

Sharing your fundraiser on social media is incredibly important to reach your goal, and we want you to feel confident and safe while sharing. Following our tips will help you to avoid bad actors, but if you do come across something suspicious, please let our team know at accountsecurity@gofundme.com.
