Choosing your fundraising target

One important thing to keep in mind is there will be a transaction fee (2.9% + $0.30 per donation in the US) applied to the funds. These fees include debit and credit charges and help to ensure your funds are processed securely. To account for these fees, we suggest making your fundraising goal slightly higher than the actual amount you need.

Suggested goals

When creating your fundraiser, you'll be asked to enter how much you hope to raise. We'll also suggest an amount based on data we have from similar fundraisers:

Our goal suggestion is based on fundraisers with similar locations, categories, etc. that found success on GoFundMe in the past 12 months. If you’re struggling to decide on the size of your need, then using our suggested goal is a great way to put your fundraiser on par with other causes on our platform.

Automated goal setting

You’ll also have the option to use automated goal setting. This feature will help take some administrative tasks off your plate so you can focus more on sharing and managing your fundraiser. You’ll tell us how much you hope to raise in total, and then we’ll take care of choosing your starting goal and adjusting it upwards as you receive donations.

Automated goal setting is a good way to ease donors into your cause and create momentum as you work towards your ultimate goal. With automated goals, you can focus on sharing your fundraiser and raising money, and we’ll take care of keeping your goal up to date.

How to edit your target amount

You'll be able to increase or decrease your goal amount at any point, and you can also opt out of automated goals at any time. Simply follow these steps from within your GoFundMe account:

1. Select "Edit" button underneath your fundraiser title
2. Then select "Edit" beside "Target amount"
3. Make the changes you'd like to your goal
4. Make sure you click "Save"
